The Great Train Robbery: What Went Wrong?
This week we take a dive into The Great Train Robbery.
As we worked our way through this story it became clear that there we so many tails, rumors and theories. We have done our best to take sources from various documentaries that have either used the criminals involved or the police involved from the time.

    Paul, you were nearer to the robbery than you think. There was a siding at Cheddington station, where the loco and consist were dragged to to carry out the forensic examination. Driver jack mills never really recovered from his injuries and died prematurely. My father was a train driver at the time, and I can tell you all BR staff would have seen them locked up for life.

  • @MervynPartin
    @MervynPartin 4 години тому

    I cannot believe that you have excused the severe injuries to driver Mills by saying they hadn't meant to do it. Well they did do it with an iron bar, and his early death was because of that, so the prison sentences were right. It is just a pity that bungling let some escape.

    My father took part in some of the identification parades for the investigation into this. At the time he worked opposite Aylesbury Police Station, which was taken over by the Flying Squad. When they needed bodies for the ID parade, the Inspector who usually ran the Police Station just wandered across the road and persuaded men, including my father, to take part.

    The city I live in has such a watershed divide. One side, the side I live on, drains into Lake Nipissing, then the French River, Lake Huron, and eventually the St Lawrence River. The other side of town trains into Trout Lake, the Mattawa River, Ottawa River, and then the St Lawrence. Not exactly sure where the line is, though. But it has come up in city council, where one member noted that the city takes water from Trout Lake, cleans it, sends it through the water system, and the the sewer water gets cleaned and sent to Lake Nipissing.

    What wasn't mentioned was why this large (or any) amount of cash was on a train. In England, banks would weed out banknotes which had become too tatty for further circulation or were surplus to their requirements, and they would either be sent for destruction or recirculated centrally. In Scotland, the banks (five of them in those days) all issue their own banknotes, but English notes also circulate. They all have to be sent back to England to be dealt with. Hence the large amount of English banknotes on the Glasgow mail train.

    It wasn’t £ 2.5 million it was Infect £7.2 million, Scotland yards was ordered to keep the amount under raps from the media as it it was considered a crime against crown , also most of the money was discontinued Scottish bank notes on it way too be incinerated at the Harmansworth incineration plant near Heathrow. At the time of the gangs arrest only £2.7 million was ever recovered. You have to remember back the Royal Mall held the Royal warrant so the robbery was seen as treason the why the gang got such a heavy prison sentence of thirty years each . Which was excessive for a non armed non violent crime . Only one of them got a lesser sentence of five years for violent assault on the train driver coursing a minor head injury. His death seven years later was never attributed to the robbery or his head injury.

    You say you aren't an academic. You may not have an academic degree, but you ARE an academic. You've done research, you've checked your facts, you've made yourself _at the least_ competent to speak intelligently on the subject of your interest, and you've created a way to share that gathered knowledge. As far as I'm concerned, University is supposed to be a place that facilitates all of what you do of your own volition. How about you say "I don't have an archaeology/history/etc. degree from university, but this is what I've learned..." ?

    The canal structures are very similar to some of the locks and such on the old C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio, if I am not mistaken) Canal near me. It runs along the Potomac River, so it doesn't try to cut off an entire peninsula. We don't have tunnels over its course AFAIK, that's pretty interesting! Many of the canals in the Washington DC and Virginia area were initially designed for horse drawn boats, so the tunnels would have needed to be much larger.

    I needed to know why they don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 77 Octagon and Every 47 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 18 Tonnes for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!! Too many people involved, they were doomed before hand ,I feel sorry for some of them who got stitched up by bend coppers

    Brilliant - one of your best videos, Paul. I was a kid when the robbery took place, and I remember the story well - you’ve filled in a lot of the details for me.

    Decianus Catus was blamed for his forcefulness towards tax collecting. At the beginning of the rebellion he legged it to Gaul, never to be seen again. it must also be remembered that most of Boudicca's slaughtering was actually of locals and were not actual Romans or had a connection to the Romans
